On a cold Saturday morning in November, the first preparations for an exceptional weekend begin. More than a hundred members of the Jamats of Paris, Brussels, Lausanne, Nantes, Toulouse, Montpellier, Grenoble, and Lyon work together towards a common goal: to prepare and distribute meals for the homeless.
The 58th TPL Sindh Open Boys Swimming Championship was held in Karachi from Friday, the 8th of November through Sunday, the 10th of November 2019, where more than 400 competitors from schools, colleges and leisure clubs participated in the event. Organised by the Sindh Swimming Association (SSA), the event included competitive swimmers from all over Sindh, as well as friendly races for children from the Special Olympics. From the Jamati level, four boys - Abran Jeeva, Aly Muhammad Dadwani, Rayan Jivani and Zayan Ajanee – participated winning five gold medals, three silver medals and four bronze medals.
The best investment for a community is an investment in its youth. The Ismaili youth of today – the leaders of tomorrow - are more global, technologically advanced, and exposed to more diverse career options compared to the previous generation. What is required, therefore, is to facilitate the youth to best achieve their ambitions whilst also developing empathy in them to serve the community in leadership roles.

Period poverty is a global issue. It is estimated that one in five girls in America have left school early or missed school because of their period. In India, approximately 70% of all reproductive diseases are caused by poor menstrual hygiene. Three young Ismailis are working to increase awareness, change perceptions, and increase access to menstrual hygiene products.
I’m surrounded by young people from all over Europe. Everyone looks, dresses and behaves differently. Actually we can hardly understand each other and have to use gestures to communicate. At home we eat different foods and have different customs, but here we are brothers and sisters in faith: This is European Youth Camp, and we are One Jamat.
“Women-owned companies are responsible for creating 2.2 million jobs across the nation. They are more and more present in leadership positions as founders, executives, and corporate board members," says Farzana Nayani. Despite these achievements, she believes more needs to be done through “workplace infrastructure and policies that engage and promote belonging for women, as opposed to a culture of traditionally excluding and holding back women.”

The Ismaili had the opportunity to speak with four Ismaili women working at the United Nations (UN) to learn about their careers, their work, and the role of the UN over its 74 year history.
From the roots of the “Kathiawadi Mitr Mandal” in 1912, the group was renamed to the modernised Ismaili Volunteer Corps (IVC), volunteers who over the span of 100 years have been enrolling with the desire to serve the Jamat, the Imam and the community. During its formal establishment in 1919 in the Indian subcontinent, the Ismaili Volunteer Corps was created with the objective of bringing an unparalleled level of professionalism to the structure and guise of the volunteers. In 1920, followed by the granting of the Coat of Arms by Mawlana Sultan Mahomed Shah, which was to be worn along with the uniform, he wore the volunteer uniform and Coat of Arms for the first time in 1921 as the ‘Colonel of the Corps.’ At this time, both Mawlana Sultan Mahomed Shah and Prince Aly Khan became patrons of the Ismaili Volunteer Corps.
The Global Centre for Pluralism (GCP) hosted the second biennial Global Pluralism Award ceremony in November 2019. At the ceremony, presided over by Mawlana Hazar Imam and attended by many members of the GCP’s Board, including Princess Zahra, the Centre recognised three winners who will each receive a $50,000 grant to help them continue their work.

Speaking on the occasion of his birthday on the 16th of December in 2016, Mawlana Hazar Imam expressed, “My wish for the decades ahead is that you stand firmly by the principles and ethics of our faith. Wherever you are, whatever age you are, whatever you do in your lives, it is essentially important to me that the principles of our faith should be respected every day of your lives.” Following the guidance of Mawlana Hazar Imam, the Jamat in Pakistan celebrated the birthday highlighting the importance of living by the ethics and principles of the Ismaili faith.
New York State Senator Anna Kaplan presented former Council for the USA President Banu Minaz Fazal, and former Council for the Northeastern United States President Shajahan Merchant, with the State Senate’s Commendation Award to recognize the Ismaili leaders for their dedication and outstanding contributions to their community while exemplifying the values of Islam.
My extended stay in Pakistan began with a family vacation from our home in Seattle, to Karachi, in February of 2019. We had gone to visit family and see where our parents had grown up, and in the process had visited some community schools, hospitals, and neighborhoods. Seeing the situations in which people were living -- conditions filled with need and poverty -- made me realize I needed to do something to help. Thus, we approached the Aga Khan Education Board (AKEB) in Pakistan to see if they could use our assistance.
