The fourth and final episode of The Ismaili Update: East Africa, features highlights from the commencement ceremony of the Aga Khan University campus in Kampala, Uganda. At the event, Princess Zahra and the First Lady of Uganda expressed their hopes for what the ambitious project will mean for the lives of people in East Africa.

Princess Zahra attended a commencement ceremony for the Aga Khan University’s Kampala campus today — marking the start of an exciting new chapter in its history, as the University establishes a long-term future in Uganda.

Project Shelter Wakadogo started with just 40 children. Today, 477 girls and boys are enrolled at the school.

Project Shelter Wakadogo, founded in the wake of war in 2005, was the first school to provide quality education to children living on the outskirts of Gulu, a small town in northern Uganda. The school recently won the T4 World’s Best School Prize for Overcoming Adversity. In an interview, co-founder Farah Williamson spoke about the story of Wakadogo and what overcoming adversity means to her.

Graduation ceremonies often signify moments of avid hope and possibility. The Aga Khan University’s first ever global convocation was no different, as hundreds of graduands — all dressed in green convocation robes — celebrated with faculty, trustees, and guests, while a worldwide audience participated in the virtual festivities.

Uganda jamat creates music video to celebrate 100 years of IVC. 

This November, Farouk Noormohamed visited Kampala and addressed the Jamat on architecture and his experience of designing the award-winning Ismaili Centre in Dushanbe and the Jamatkhana in Khorog.

About 800 Orphans from Kasangati Orphans Fund Society (KOFS) which is in Kawanda in Kawempe division, Kampala were provided a meal, drinks and biscuits on the occasion of Eid al-Adha.  The Orphanage doubles as a school and Mosque within the same location and is probably the biggest orphanage in the country receiving children from as far as Sudan.
