As the Jamat in Uganda faced trying times through a 42-Day Full Lockdown initiated by the Government to curb the spread of Covid-19, our Jamati Institutions were hard at work coming up with innovative ways to care for and engage the Jamat.
During this pandemic, the Jamat needs to take extra precautions to be healthy, both physically and mentally. To thrive and not just survive these lockdowns, a healthy diet rich in fruit and vegetables, protein foods and whole grains is important for a strong immune system, as are other healthy lifestyle habits (e.g. exercise, adequate sleep, managing stress etc.). There are many nutrients that are involved with the normal functioning of the immune system and therefore it is encouraged to eat a variety of nutrient rich healthy foods each day in order to support immune function.
In order to help the Jamat manage their health and to increase knowledge and awareness about nutrition, AKHB along with WDP have launched a 4-part online session, hosted and prepared by Nabila Meghani, a qualified and licensed nutritionist. The sessions are available to all Jamati members within Uganda and hope to engage and serve the community at large.
The objective of the nutrition program is to help the Jamat navigate their journey with nutrition and to understand the foundations and basic terminology of the science behind food. It is also to provide the Jamat with the appropriate tools to improve their quality of life and to reduce the risk of chronic illnesses
Topics to be covered will include:
- The various types of nutrients
- Calculating calorie intake
- Choosing the right carbohydrates
- Managing blood sugar through food
- Immune Boosting Recipes
- Tips on healthy eating
- How food affects different systems in the body
- Healthy food substitutions
- Exercise
This initiative is a part of AKHB’s larger goal to support the overall health and wellness of the Jamat, along with other initiatives such as health check-ups, vaccine scheduling, etc.
