It can give shape to cultural values, traditions, aspirations, and be a bedrock for sustainable development.
Toronto, 25 November 2013 – The University of Toronto’s Trinity College held a special convocation this evening, to bestow upon Mawlana Hazar Imam the degree of Doctor of Sacred Letters, honoris causa. In a glowing citation, the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, presented Hazar Imam before the Chancellor of Trinity College.
The Ismaili Jamatkhana and Centre, Kinshasa is a contemporary complex that blends timeless traditional design principles. It provides an environment for spiritual contemplation and reflection, and represents a new milestone in the long history of the Congolese Jamat, which continues to build on its pioneering spirit in a country of growing opportunity.
Scheduled to open in Toronto in the summer of 2014, the Aga Khan Museum has embarked on a tour to introduce itself in major American centres. As the first museum in North America dedicated to the Islamic Arts, it is using the opportunity to demonstrate that despite being separated by centuries of history, ancient works and the knowledge they carry within them, remain relevant to us today.
In July 2013, 64 students with roots in 13 countries gathered at the Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa to participate in Global Encounters, the first summer programme of its kind for Ismaili youth from around the world. Students engaged with pressing issues in global development, contended with real-world challenges, broadened their world views, built new friendships, and nurtured a sense of self-discovery.
The Great ShakeOut is an annual drill that teaches people around the world how to protect themselves in the event of an earthquake. The Aga Khan Development Network, which has been participating in the ShakeOut drill since 2011, drew more than 168 000 particpants last year, teaching them to DROP, COVER and HOLD ON when the earth begins to tremble.
When an earthquake strikes, there are only seconds to react — knowing how to correctly respond can save your life or prevent major injury. Practising the DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON technique is important. You may only have seconds to protect yourself before a strong earthquake knocks you down, or causes dangerous objects to fall on you.
During the visit, which included a ceremony marking the restoration of Humayun's Tomb and the inauguration of the Aga Khan Academy, Hyderabad, Mawlana Hazar Imam met with senior government leaders at the national and state levels. Hazar Imam also devoted a considerable amount of time to meeting with the Jamat of Western India, who gathered at Hasanabad Jamatkhana.

Delhi, 18 September 2013 – The restoration of the 16th century garden tomb of the Mughal emperor Humayun was inaugurated in Delhi today. Mawlana Hazar Imam, the Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh, the Minister of Culture, Chandresh Kumari Katoch, and Chairman Ratan Tata of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust presided over the ceremony together, a reflection of the public-private partnership that was pivotal to the project’s success.
Dhaka, Bangladesh, 17 September 2013 – Concluding a two-day visit to Bangladesh, Mawlana Hazar Imam departed from Dhaka this afternoon. Hazar Imam travels on to India for a two-week visit.
Delhi, 17 September 2013 – Mawlana Hazar Imam arrived in India today, starting a 10-day visit during which he will join Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in marking the completion of the restoration of Humayun's Tomb. He will also inaugurate a new Aga Khan Academy in Hyderabad.
Dhaka, Bangladesh, 16 September 2013 – Mawlana Hazar Imam arrived in Dhaka this morning for a two-day official visit to Bangladesh at the invitation of the government. During the visit, Hazar Imam is expected to meet with government leaders, sign a protocol agreement between the AKDN and the Government of Bangladesh and meet with the Jamat at the new Ismaili Jamatkhana and Centre.
Dhaka, Bangladesh, 16 September 2013 – An agreement was signed between the Aga Khan Development Network and the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh today, that will work towards improving the quality of life of the people of Bangladesh.
Five projects from Austria, Iran, Morocco, Palestine, and Sudan were presented with the 2013 Aga Khan Award for Architecture on Saturday. The Award ceremony was held at the Castle of São Jorge in Lisbon in the presence of Mawlana Hazar Imam and Portugal's head of state, President Cavaco Silva.
The 2013 ceremony of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture will take place on 6 September in Lisbon, Portugal, and will be broadcast live on the AKDN website starting at 8:30 PM Lisbon time (7:30 PM GMT).
