Volunteers clean parks as part of the Ismaili CIVIC 150 initiative in Mississauga.

Close to 200 volunteers gathered to clean Mississauga Valley Park on September 17 as part of the Ismaili CIVIC 150 initiative.

A Khushiali program for children and parents who attend the SEEDs program was held in Dubai on 8 July, 2017, a few days before the historic Diamond Jubilee on 11 July, 2017.  

The theme of 2017's International Women’s Day held at the Ismaili Centre was ‘Be Bold for Change’. Sarah Allidina reports on the event.

Overcast skies did nothing to darken the moods of the crowd gathered to witness the North American premiere of the Skate Girls of Kabul photography exhibit at the Ismaili Centre Toronto.

In 2017, the Canadian Jamat is celebrating both the Diamond Jubilee as well as the 150th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation. In honour of these special occasions, the Jamat has pledged one million hours of service to improving quality of life in Canada as part of the Ismaili CIVIC 150 initiative.

Mawlana Hazar Imam has remarked that Ismaili Centres have come to be seen as "ambassadorial buildings, which today reflect and illustrate much of what the Shia Ismaili community represents." These centres serve as a bridge between the Ismaili community and the communities where Ismailis live. There are six such buildings around the world, in London, Lisbon, Dubai, Dushanbe, Vancouver, and Toronto. Each building is unique both in architectural style as well as functionality. This photo essay depicts the beauty of these buildings, with quotes by Mawlana Hazar Imam on their function and importance.

At the Ismaili Centre in Lisbon, the majority of the building’s footprint is outdoors. Its gardens and fountains encourage conversation, social exchange and opportunities to host premiere events in Portugal.

It is difficult to imagine the Ismaili community without the Jamatkhana, and yet it has not always been a part of the Jamat’s story. 

Volunteers ventured out into stormy conditions to provide assistance in flood affected areas

Hurricane Harvey has been referred to as a "1,000-year flood," with its 50 inches of rainfall exceeding all records for the continental USA. It is estimated that damage from the storm will surpass that of hurricanes Sandy (New Jersey 2012) and Katrina (Louisiana 2005) combined. Volunteers have worked to reach Jamati members and others affected by the flooding, and to provide assistance with the recovery process.

Communal festivals are usually a time of traditional rituals, as well as the sights, sounds and colors that signify happiness and rejoicing.  In the vein of anticipation and celebration, the Ismaili Centre Dubai hosted Rang-e-Henna, for the UAE Jamat on 9 July, 2017 in the Social Hall.

An audience of about 150 guests gathered at the Ismaili Centre Burnaby to hear renowned Canadian-Ismaili author M.G. Vassanji speak on the evening of Thursday July 15. 

 

To promote the awareness of Ismaili heritage structures in Mumbai, some of which are centuries old, and to help the youth understand the historical significance behind these monuments, the National Communications team conducted its first ever Heritage Walk for youth aged 18 - 35.

On Sunday 9th July 2017 the Ismaili National Council for the United Kingdom hosted a reception for Mayor Sylvester Turner, the Mayor of Houston and members of the Houston Trade and Investment mission to the UK and Germany.

Music has long been considered the language of the gods: the earliest philosophers have noted its capacity to move us towards the highest realms. Most religious traditions incorporate the use of music as as a means of religious expression and prayer.  One only has to listen to the rapturous singing of the choir in a church or the devoted singing of bhajans in a Hindu temple, to realize the potential of music to give flight to the soul. Music, according to Plato is a moral law: it gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.

The Ismaili tradition of voluntary service has a long history, and has continued with the creation of modern institutions by Mawlana Sultan Mahomed Shah and by Mawlana Hazar Imam, with the array of institutions in countries where the Jamat resides, as well as the developing world through the Aga Khan Development Network.

For the past 50 years, Canada has welcomed the Ismaili community with open arms and has become home to many. 

With the issue of Islamophobia being a constant hindrance in the lives of Muslims around the world, one group of Ismaili youth is trying to change the situation.

On Saturday July 8 the annual Ismaili Muslim Community Stampede Breakfast was held at the Ismaili Jamatkhana and Centre in Calgary with over 6000 people in attendance.
