In 2013, she graduated from Khyber Teaching Hospital Peshawar, which serves a large population in the northwest of Pakistan and northeastern Afghanistan. Upon obtaining her nursing diploma, she went to work with the international medical non-profit, Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) as a staff nurse.
After three years with the non-profit, she began work as an ER charge nurse at the Hayat Abad Medical Complex, which is the second largest hospital in the city of Peshawar.
As an ER nurse, Haizia is on the frontlines of the Covid-19 pandemic. She engages Covid-19 patients in the emergency department and must perform whatever duties are required of her from the medical team.
She copes with similar anxieties as many frontline healthcare workers, and often thinks about her three-year-old daughter, Aira, at home.
After many days in the ER seeing the effects of Covid-19 first hand, Haizia feels prevention is the only way to limit the spread of this virus. Her message to the Jamat around the globe is to “stay home and protect yourself, your family, and your community.”
