Based in Karachi, Pakistan, Zaibunissa Karim has been working in a high-pressure role as assistant head nurse of the post-anesthesia recovery unit at the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH).

Zaibunissa, who attends Karimabad Jamatkhana, grew up in Karachi and went to nursing school at AKUH before taking a job there.

In addition to her regular duties, she has had to manage and control the movement of people as many patients and families pass through the recovery unit each day. Obtaining and equipping her staff with personal protective equipment has been particularly challenging.

When required to inform a patient that they have the virus, one thing she keeps in mind is to have compassion as, otherwise, “it will only add to their mental stress.”

Zaibunissa also emphasises the importance of seeking out accurate information during the pandemic: “Correct information and practices regarding Covid-19 can help eliminate fear and increase awareness about the virus."
