Every year, Muslims celebrate Eid by meeting and greeting friends and family through private visits at home andby giving presents to each other as a gesture of happiness but this year, Eid will also be celebrated in a different way.
Given the instructions on social distancing schools, prayer halls and places of social gatherings have been closed down and so Eid celebrations could not be planned as normally in many households and institutions. In Mozambique, this led to an idea of celebrating Eid virtually whereby all students, teachers and parents nationwidecould participate in Eid celebration from the comfort of their homes.
On 23 May, principals and teachers executed age appropriate activities on a common platform through zoom call and invited students and parents to participate.
The preparation of this grand initiative started during the month of Ramadan which brought all teachers, students and parents together not physically but virtually. Students participated in zoom sessions by meeting and greeting all present on the call, reciting poems, making cards and posters with the theme of Eid.
Each one of the students and parent, in their respective groups met many new faces, talked about their good deeds and also participated in Ramadan and Eid related quiz to improve their knowledge regarding the festival. This virtual exchange proved to be a very unique celebration, complimenting the vision of the Ismaili Jamat as One Jamat.
