In the Ismaili tradition service is a way of life which is faith driven.  Volunteers are pillars of the community and strive to deliver excellence in service with humility, integrity and compassion. Not only are they dedicated but they find ways to improve what they already know to better serve the Jamat. As such, The Human Resources Portfolio launched a proactive initiative called The Volunteer Skill Development Program which took place on February 22nd, 23rd, 29th  and March 1st  2020  in Maputo, Mozambique.

This training program was essentially created to provide volunteers with the necessary skills to ensure positive interaction with the Jamat and amongst each other, contributing to the growth and development as an individual and as a volunteer. The objective was to professionalize the level of service and build sustainability within the IVC so that the tradition of Seva continues in our Jamats and volunteers are able to feel inclusive and fullfilled.

The workshops were conducted by Ms Shellin Adatia from Canada who has more than 25 years of Seva experience. With her coaching, volunteers covered two core modules, namely: The Concept of SEVA: Journey of a Volunteer and Heart to Heart: Exceptional Interaction & Conflict Resolution.

The Seva Framework was introduced and it consists of one being Safety Minded, Exceptional, Value Based and Ambassador while performing volunteer service. This module explores how we treat each other, our volunteers and the broader community. Similary, each element was reviewed so that the participants can bring together their awareness of the concepts and develop a shared brand for performing badged and non badged voluntary service as a united Jamat.

“Undertaking SEVA is a blessing and a trust;

That every time you serve, you serve with a smile.

Build within Strength, Dignity and lastly Devotion.”

 A Quote from the session, 23rd February 2020

Moreover, how do we apply the concept of SEVA? The second module builds on each element of the Seva Framework. This allows volunteers to grasp an understanding of the suitable behaviour and etiquette required whilst maintaining a proper image as a Representative and Ambassador of our community. The volunteers were coached through various scenarios and cases best fitting to the most common conflicts that could arise. The volunteers were able to learn the importance of communication and consequently equipped to interact with the Jamat.

When you serve the jamat, serve with your heart.

Serve with a smile and serve with  pleasure.

… A hand over your heart

… Smile

… My pleasure.”

A Quote from the Session, 29th February 2020

In conclusion, volunteers of the Southern Mozambican Jamat completed the program and are equipped with the knowledge and skills on how to better serve the Jamat and the community. The IVC are once again ready to sleflessly serve the Jamat to the best of their ability.
