What began as an adventure shifted to a journey about self-discovery. The setting for this journey was Kenya. A vibrant land with, not just breathtaking nature, but also important lessons embedded in every experience, every face, and every moment.
Our first stop, Kenya’s capital city, Nairobi, hummed with life. Walking through its markets showed me a way of everyday life, with all of its vibrancy set against a backdrop that somehow felt both foreign and yet familiar. Our next stop was Nanyuki, which was filled with adventure and excitement. Going on safari and watching wildlife in their natural element was an incredible experience.
However, beyond the places we visited, the people I met left lasting memories. There were participants from over 20 countries and together, we laughed across borders and language barriers. We celebrated Ismaili traditions, and everyone’s unique backgrounds creating a sense of belonging amongst us all. Dancing to African beats, learning prayers in different languages, and sharing stories under the stars showed me the beauty of connecting all whilst embracing our diversity.
Another memorable experience was visiting Mombasa, where our community service work shaped my view of the world. Speaking with local students, helping to paint a classroom or sharing ideas, I learnt the impact of small acts and how we are all part of something bigger.
Even when the journey ended, I still felt as if I was embarking on a new beginning. There were new friendships, responsibilities and a new perspective on humanity. The camp also taught me how experiences can significantly shape us, and connect individuals from across the globe, creating bonds that can stand the test of time.
One day, I hope to return but this time, as a facilitator. I hope to not only guide others but contribute to that life-changing experience that made me who I am today. If you would like to explore, connect, and make a difference, the Global Encounters camp is a good place to start. It’s more than a camp; it’s a journey of growth and self-discovery that will leave you inspired and empowered to shape the world around you.
