In days past, Sehrish Ayaz Hussain’s role as a pediatric nurse was to care for ill children and to educate and work with patients’ families. Now, in the isolation ward, Sehrish and other frontline nurses are their patients’ family.

As a trained emergency nurse, Sehrish is well versed in managing many chaotic needs in a crisis. But Covid-19 adds layers of considerations that didn't exist before, such as wearing personal protective equipment and taking precautions against spreading the virus to others.

Sehrish is from Pakistan, and currently works at the American Hospital in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Her daily duties with isolated Covid-19 patients go beyond administering healthcare. She shares in her patients’ worries and anxieties. By listening and providing comfort, she, too, gathers strength to continue fighting and standing up for her patients’ needs.

Over the past weeks, Sehrish has found the pandemic is not a problem for one person or one community, but rather, a problem for the whole world.

“We all need to work together, locally and globally, so that we can win this battle together … We must follow the rules and disciplines of the countries within which we reside. I urge us all to fight this together,” Sehrish said.
