More than 100 trees were planted in Singapore in June as part of the #OneMillionTrees movement.

People of all ages joined Minister of State Alvin Tan, NParks Singapore, Tanjong Pagar Town Council as well as Our Green MoCa - Moulmein-Cairnhill to commemorate 60 years of Singapore's tree-planting campaign. Included in the fauna was the mempat (cratoxylum formosum) tree which late founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew planted to begin an island-wide planting campaign in 1963.

Minister Alvin spoke to residents to share NParks’ latest initiative to encourage families to not only plant but to tag their trees with a QR code to signify their individual contribution to Singapore’s #OneMillionTrees campaign.

The #OneMillionTrees movement aims to restore nature back through the planting of a million more trees across Singapore over the next 10 years. This is part of efforts to transform Singapore into a City in Nature, which is a key pillar of the Singapore Green Plan 2030. To date, 544,642 trees have been planted.

The Ismaili Far East CIVIC volunteers Nisar Keshvani, Akbar Makani, Jihan Alani and Aditya Srivats were on site to educate residents through its new pilot "Benefit of Trees" booth — a learning exercise to educate with interesting facts and match them to important themes like climate change, harmony, history of greening, health and well-being, amongst others.

The team was also joined by Taylor Patterson from the The Earthshot Prize who met with various constituents and familiarised with Singapore's grassroots efforts. Singapore will be hosting The Earthshot Prize's third iteration in November 2023.
