I’ll never forget the sound of 120 people wincing audibly as I dislocated my elbow at a middle school wrestling meet. Most of all, I’ll never forget the way the entire world and all its problems melted away as I sped down a hill on my longboard.

Thereafter, Mr Darmanin presided over a ceremony to bestow the Legion d’honneur upon Shamir Samdjee, President of the Ismaili Council for France, in recognition of the Ismaili Imamat and Ismaili community’s longstanding contributions to France.

I come from the roof of the world: the Pamir Mountains in Tajikistan, a place abundant in natural beauty and unique traditions where people are known to be kind, loving, and hospitable. It was my dream to attend the University of Central Asia (UCA), but being from the remote district of Ishkashim, I always questioned whether I could compete with students from big cities and fancy schools.
