Volunteers In Action
Drawing on her 19 years of experience as a neonatal nurse practitioner in Ontario and Alberta, Dr Shahirose Sadrudin Premji of Calgary was asked to assist the Internal Audit Department in undertaking a review of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at AKUH in Karachi, Pakistan, over a five week period.
In July 2007, Dr. Azim Juma was recruited as a TKN volunteer to work with AKHS to help implement the Family Medicine and Clinical Excellence concepts in Badakshan. The design of a family medicine system for Tajikistan was developed after researching “Best Practices” in family medicine in four countries: Canada, USA, UK and Australia.
Yasmin Dharani has been volunteering with the Aga Khan Academies in the area of communications for the past 18 months. The nature of her work evolves as additional needs are identified. Her role has expanded over time to encompass several areas, primarily related to increasing the visibility of the Academies as the agency grows and expands.
“I can still visualize myself in the classroom,” reflected Nimisha Manji as she recalled her experiences at the Aga Khan Academy, Hyderabad. Nimisha embarked on a three-month TKN assignment as a music teacher at the Academy in September 2013. She primarily focused on teaching music theory and composition to students in the Middle Years program, but was also actively involved with students in the Primary program.
Naushad was inspired by the number of committed individuals who wanted to improve the general health and eye care of the communities they served. He was able to speak with the leaders of various institutions such as the Chief Ophthalmologist of Chitral Government Hospital and the CEO of AKHSP, Chitral (PK) to review the current services provided in the region and how they envisioned eye care being developed to support future community needs.
Karim leveraged his academic and research background as well as his expertise in Western-Muslim intersections to prepare University of Central Asia graduates for reducing tensions between Eastern and Western societies in the media.
Naseem Jaffer supported with the development of UCA’s inaugural summer camp curriculum based on a thorough assessment of Central Asian educational realities and international university expectations and standards.
The contribution of TKN volunteers has been instrumental in the success of the Girls Mentorship Program of Canada. The program is designed to provide a support system for teenage girls during critical years in their lives. Mentees are paired with mentors who are professional women with whom they can relate.
Sabeen Virani Dhanani led a study that identified the motivations and barriers to volunteering amongst young professionals in the Northeast region including cities with deep talent such as New York, Boston and Washington.
The ESL program was first developed in 2008 and implemented in Syria during two-six month terms with the excellent support of Yasmin Walji, a TKN volunteer from the United Kingdom. Yasmin subsequently delivered an ESL teaching program in Afghanistan.
Shaheen Maredia successfully trained the AKU Design Team on Revit software, expanding their knowledge of an essential tool in building modelling, and provided long term support to ensure their skills continue to develop over time.
The two year Masters in Nursing program at AKU-SONAM is the first of its kind in Pakistan. Thesis defense is one of the most important forms of training within the program. The process requires an External Examiner to review student theses and examine them on the day of their thesis defense. Dr. Salimah Meghani was selected as the External Examiner for 2011 through the Time and Knowledge Nazrana initiative.
