Are you passionate about fashion and would like to learn about the history, development and use of garments and accessories from around the world? The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York is offering a free course with the theme "Fashion as Design".

Among all objects produced from design, clothing is the most universal and the most intimate. Like other types of design, fashion is about the productive tensions between form and function, automation and craftsmanship, standardization and personalization, universality and self-expression, pragmatism and utopian vision.

In this course you will have the opportunity to explore fashion design from 70 garments and accessories from around the world, ranging from kente fabrics to jeans and 3D printed dresses. Through the different garments, we will take a closer look at what we wear, what materials are used and what they mean. Directly from artists, manufacturers, historians and other professionals who work in this industry on a daily basis, we will learn about the history and development of each garment and its uses, meanings and impact over time.

This course has as its main objectives:

- To develop critical tools to appreciate and contextualize fashion design - from everyday clothes to haute couture garments - through many different perspectives;
- To trace the history, development and impact of garments over time and explore how they can be reinvented;
- Explore different garments from many different perspectives, including politics, identity and economics;
- To deepen knowledge about the life cycle of garments, from their design and production to their marketing, distribution and consumption.
- Help to better understand the choices you make about fashion in terms of the visual language of clothing, individual and collective identities, as well as issues such as labour practices and sustainability.
