We don’t often think about it, but architecture is everywhere. The philosopher and author Alain de Botton has said, “In an odd but quietly very important way, works of architecture ‘speak’ to us. Some buildings, streets and even whole cities seem to speak of chaos, aggression or military pride; others seem to be whispering to us of calm or graceful dignity, generosity or gentleness.”

The Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur was presented with an Aga Khan Award in 2004. The cross-section of the towers based on a Rub el Hizb, a traditional Muslim symbol which consists of two squares that overlap.

Later this week, Mawlana Hazar Imam will preside over the 14th cycle of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. To mark this occasion, we explore some of the important questions surrounding the theme of architecture and the built environment.

Earlier this week, six winners of the 2019 Aga Khan Award for Architecture cycle were announced, recognising a wide variety of projects in Bahrain, Bangladesh, Palestine, the Russian Federation, Senegal, and the United Arab Emirates.

In January 2019, an independent Master Jury reviewed hundreds of nominations for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. A rigorous process in which a team of experts investigate each of the 20 shortlisted projects is now underway.

The shortlist of projects in the running for the 2019 Aga Khan Award for Architecture (AKAA) was announced at an AKAA exhibition hosted in Kazan in the Russian Federation. The 20 shortlisted projects, which include residential, cultural, educational and industrial buildings, as well as public spaces, are located in 16 countries.

The inspiration for the Friendship Centre came from the Buddhist monasteries in the area, and the architectural influences include exposed brickwork, stark character, and a quadrilateral layout.

Yesterday evening, the Architectural League of New York accorded Mawlana Hazar Imam its highest and most important honour.

Al Ain, UAE, 6 November 2016 — Architecture does not merely give form to the spaces in which we live and move, it profoundly shapes and can improve the quality of human life. The winning projects in the 13th cycle of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture testify to this.

Dubai, 4 November 2016 — Mawlana Hazar Imam arrived in the United Arab Emirates this evening, ahead of this weekend’s presentation of the 2016 Aga Khan Award for Architecture. He was accompanied by Prince Amyn and Prince Aly Muhammad.

Anticipation has been growing in the United Arab Emirates since the announcement in October that the country will host the presentation ceremony of the 2016 Aga Khan Award for Architecture. Over the past few weeks, members of the Jamat have been learning about the Award, discussing the winning projects and visiting an exhibition at the site of the forthcoming award ceremony.

Connectivity between people, adapting to new contexts and responding to climate challenges stand out as notable themes among the winners of the 13th cycle of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. The six recipient projects were announced in Abu Dhabi today, along with the venue of the award ceremony.

As the winners of the 13th cycle of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture were announced, TheIsmaili.org’s Elisha Nathoo sat down with Professor Hanif Kara, a member of the Steering Committee to talk about what the Award has achieved in the nearly four decades since it was established.

Five projects from Austria, Iran, Morocco, Palestine, and Sudan were presented with the 2013 Aga Khan Award for Architecture on Saturday. The Award ceremony was held at the Castle of São Jorge in Lisbon in the presence of Mawlana Hazar Imam and Portugal's head of state, President Cavaco Silva.

As part of his visit, Hazar Imam also held meetings with a number of senior Portuguese officials and presided over the signing ceremony of a renewed Memorandum of Understanding between the Catholic University of Portugal and the Aga Khan University.

The 2013 ceremony of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture will take place on 6 September in Lisbon, Portugal, and will be broadcast live on the AKDN website starting at 8:30 PM Lisbon time (7:30 PM GMT).
