In an adult, around 4.5 to 5.5 litres of blood circulate through the body, performing various functions. Basically, the blood is like our body's maintenance guardian, looking after its proper functioning: it transports oxygen and nutrients throughout the body; it removes waste materials such as carbon dioxide, urea or lactic acid; it protects the body from infections; it regulates acidity levels (pH) and body temperature; and it defends the body against possible diseases.
But blood may not always fulfil its functions: either because something isn't working as it should, or because the amount in the body is no longer sufficient for some reason. In both cases, there is the possibility of receiving a transfusion from someone else.
The development of medicine has increased the need for blood and blood derivatives. Even though there is a greater number of donors, the reserves are not increasing significantly and, in addition, the (in)compatibility between the various blood types has to be taken into account.
In each donation, a person gives a maximum of 450 ml of blood, less than 10% of the amount circulating in an adult's body, and a single donation can save the lives of up to three people.
It's important to note that in about a day, the body restores the amount of blood that was taken from the donation. In addition, donating blood is a safe act and all the materials used in the procedure are disposable. There is, therefore, no risk of being contaminated when donating blood.
When we donate blood, we provide a product that is essential for an individual's survival. In some situations, transfusion is unavoidable, so it is essential to have blood in stock, which is achieved exclusively through donation.
Donating blood has no negative repercussions on your health and will only benefit those who need it.
We, therefore, invite you to take part in another Blood Donation Campaign, organised by Ismaili CIVIC Portugal, which will take place on March 2nd, from 9:30 m to 1:30pm, at the Ismali Centre, Lisbon.
Here you can find more information and register. Bring a friend and/or family member and help save lives!
