This year's Global Ismaili CIVIC Day was marked by the clean-up of the beaches of Dafundo and Cruz Quebrada!

Global Ismaili CIVIC Day (GICD) is an annual event that mobilises the Ismaili community around the world to carry out voluntary actions for the well-being of society. This date represents an opportunity to reinforce the values of solidarity, compassion and service to others, the ethical and humanitarian principles of Islam, with the aim of fostering civic involvement and social responsibility through activities that contribute to sustainable development and support for local communities.

This initiative takes place simultaneously in several countries and its activities differ according to local needs. They can include actions such as health campaigns, education programmes, tree planting and, often, activities focused on the environment, such as beach clean-ups, which stand out for their ecological and social relevance.

Beach cleaning is a voluntary activity that generates large-scale environmental and social benefits. Beaches are fragile ecosystems of vital importance for biodiversity, and their preservation is crucial for environmental balance.  It aims to reduce the amount of waste polluting the oceans and coastal areas. Most of the trash found on beaches is made up of plastic waste, which takes hundreds of years to decompose and causes enormous damage to marine life!

The impact of beach clean-ups goes far beyond removing visible waste. By removing tonnes of rubbish, volunteers help protect marine ecosystems, preserve the health of fauna and flora and ensure that future generations can enjoy clean beaches and healthy oceans!

Environmental Impact: This year GICD had around 90 volunteers, from the youngest to the oldest.
Together, we were able to collect around 88kg of waste:

  • 68.3 kg of packaging
    9.4 kg of plastics
    10.2 kg of glass
    2055 cigarette butts

Global Ismaili CIVIC Day is an extremely important event as it encourages volunteering on a global scale and promotes collaboration between communities and societies to solve local and global problems. Among its most significant actions, beach cleaning stands out for its direct impact on the environment, helping to preserve biodiversity and ensure the sustainability of marine ecosystems. In addition, civic involvement through volunteer activities helps to strengthen social cohesion and educate the population about the importance of caring for the environment. These initiatives, like others promoted by Ismaili CIVIC, are a reminder that each one of us can make a difference and that together we can build a fairer, more sustainable and prosperous future for everyone!
