On 29 September, from 9:45am to 1pm, we invite all of Jamat to join Global Ismaili CIVIC Day 2024 for a clean-up of the beautiful Dafundo Beach, in partnership with the League for the Protection of Nature (LPN) and Oeiras City Council.
This event has been growing in size and impact since its global launch in 2021, and this year is no exception. Building on previous successes, we hope to bring together a crowd of volunteers committed to improving the quality of life in our communities and protecting the environment.
Global Ismaili CIVIC Day is a global initiative that reflects the fundamental values of Islam, such as service to humanity, peace, compassion and care for the most vulnerable.
Volunteers, regardless of their religious beliefs, origins, gender or age, come together to serve the community, characteristic of the principles of our faith.
Last year, during Global Ismaili CIVIC Day, thousands of volunteers around the world gave their time and effort to carry out activities in favour of improving our communities. In Portugal, we've been carrying out beach clean-ups with a lot of impact: in 2021, at Praia do Dafundo and in 2022 at Praia da Ponta dos Corvos, a total of hundreds of volunteers took part, as well as in 2023, which resulted in the collection of more than 400kg of rubbish. This annual initiative not only had a positive environmental impact, but also promoted understanding of the importance of maintaining the oceans and intercultural dialogue.
This year, our action will focus on cleaning up Dafundo Beach and Cruz Quebrada, in partnership with LPN and Oeiras City Council.
The beauty of the beach and the importance of preserving our natural environment serve as a constant reminder of our responsibility to live in community and work for the well-being of all.
As Mawlana Hazar Imam said, "our faith constantly reminds us to contemplate and give thanks for the beauty of the world and the universe around us, and of our responsibility and obligation, as good stewards of God's creation, to leave the world in a better condition than we found it."
Beach cleaning is a concrete action that everyone can take to contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment.
It's also an opportunity to unite the community around a common goal: taking care of our planet.
