Taking care of our health is crucial! When we're faced with high temperatures, we mustn't give up some rules and therefore there are mandatory precautions that must always be present.
As well as having fun this holiday season, we should always take with us some basic and essential advice and care for our health and that of those around us, which you can find in this article.
When it's very hot, a swim in the sea or pool can be comforting and sometimes the best way to combat the heat. However, both the water and the sun can pose certain dangers, which is why we need to be vigilant and take the following points into account:
- Choose guarded beaches and always look out for the flag, respecting the rules;
- The sea can be an enemy. Even if it seems calm and without danger, it can have currents or rapids that are not visible. If in doubt, it's best to speak to a lifeguard;
- Avoid entering the water suddenly if it is very cold. Thermal shock can be fatal, causing digestion to stop, fainting or even cardiac arrest;
- We should always pay attention to meal times and respect the interval for digestion, which is between 2.30 and 3 hours, whether it's a light meal or a heavier one;
- Educate youngsters about the meaning of the colours of the flags on the beach, as well as respecting the lifeguard and all the rules of conduct, both on beaches and in swimming pools.
Regarding people of advanced age (+65), here are some precautions and indications that should be adopted:
- Drink lots of water and/or refreshing drinks such as lemonade or iced tea (avoid soft drinks and alcoholic beverages);
- Stay in fresh or air-conditioned environments;
- Avoid direct exposure to the sun;
- Wear light, light clothing and a hat;
- Eat lighter meals and eat more often during the day.
