The Aga Khan Youth and Sports Board for Pakistan (AKYSB,P) has launched its first Football Club in Pakistan. Since 2018, sports such as cycling, volleyball, winter sports and blind cricket are amongst the various clubs that have been initiated by AKYSB,P. The objective of initiating the various sports clubs was to give a platform to the talented youth of the Jamat in professional sports and to help them excel at the national and international level.

Apart from cricket and volleyball, football is among the top three sports of interest of the Jamati youth in Pakistan. A number of male and female Jamati football players are registered with various professional clubs, primarily in urban centres of their respective cities, and more than ten Jamati women are players in the Pakistan National Football Team.

The AKYSB,P has organized the first Football Club Championship for the Jamati youth, both male and female, on the local level. Around 40 local clubs from eight regions will compete to secure a place in the final, which will be held in Islamabad in June 2019. The winning team and other prominent players, men and women, will be selected to form the National AKYSB,P Football Club which will compete in the Division B championship of the Pakistan Football Federation at the mainstream level.

AKYSB,P Chairman Shamez Mukhi mentioned, “This club championship is the first of its kind in the Jamat which will allow our elite players from the grassroots level to showcase their talent at the national level and hopefully get selected by the Pakistan Football Federation to be part of the national team. Through this initiative we will see a football culture engaging a large number of children, adolescents and adults who will participate in football coaching and competitions throughout the country,” he added.

The AKYSB,P Football Club is registered with the Pakistan Football Federation while the AKYSB Cycling, Volleyball, Winter Sports and Blind Cricket clubs are registered with the respective provincial associations in Sindh, Punjab, Islamabad and Gilgit-Baltistan.

On this occasion, Aliza Sabir commented, “I participated in the Jubilee Games in Dubai in 2016 in which Team Pakistan won the silver medal. I am looking forward to participate in the AKYSB Club Championship, which is an excellent opportunity for all football players.”
