Established in 2015, the mission of the Aga Khan Education Board is to ensure that the Jamat receives equitable access to quality education. AKEB is committed to fostering excellence, enabling individuals to achieve their optimum potential and fully participate as members of society.
Beyond a mere focus on education, the initiative embodies a visionary commitment to societal transformation through comprehensive knowledge and skill development dissemination. With programmes focused on the child’s holistic development, AKEB spearheads Parwaaz, the Quality Education Programme, the Remedial Programme, the English Language Enhancement Programme (ELEP), STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics), the Scholarship Programme and ICT (Information and Computer Technology).
As a guiding standard, Mawlana Hazar Imam has emphasised that a child's early years are crucial for their development. Under AKEB, Parwaaz, a first-of-its-kind parental education programme for children aged six months to three years, was built upon positive parental practices while introducing culturally- and socially-grounded knowledge and skills for parents and their families. Divided into multiple sessions conducted in an informal setting by trained volunteers, Early Childhood Development (ECD) themes, including health, nutrition, play, cognitive stimulation and religious perspectives, are woven throughout the programme.
With an increasing demand of English language skills, AKEB’s English Language Portfolio has introduced sessions on “Modern English in the Digital Era,” which aims to provide students, professionals and other members of the Jamat with an opportunity to learn English at an affordable price. The programme enables students to discuss themes such as climate change, ethics, digital development, sustainability, inclusion and world peace, exploring how individuals can positively influence education across Pakistan and worldwide.
Furthermore, AKEB’s partnership with the Pakistan American Cultural Center (PACC) provides students across Pakistan to be a part of the Diploma Programme, where they are trained to be professional English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers.
Another key programme is the Bridge Programme, under the Remedial Programme, where mentors adopt a comprehensive approach to instruction while instilling critical and analytical skills in secondary students to fill conceptual gaps in their academic competencies. More importantly, through its mentorship approach, volunteers serve as role models to inspire hope for a better future amongst camp participants.
Acknowledging the uniqueness of each individual, these programmes cater to diverse talents, interests and aspirations while being tailored for specific age groups. The objective is to create a platform where individuals achieve academic proficiency and foster social responsibility. Through various scholarship programmes of the Aga Khan Foundation and the Aga Khan Education Service, Pakistan, AKEB supports the academic pursuits of individuals poised to make meaningful contributions to society.
Quality education forms the bedrock for cultivating a meritocratic civil society and nurturing diverse attitudes. Mawlana Hazar Iman has emphasised that pluralist societies are not historical accidents but an ongoing result of quality education and continuous investment by governments and civil society in identifying and celebrating the diversity of the world’s peoples.
This year, the AKEB Quality Schooling Programme is embarking on the journey to become a more dynamic Quality Education Programme (QEP), initiating the incorporation of diverse initiatives such as Remedial, STEAM, ICT and ELP under its expansive umbrella. Today, as we celebrate the International Day of Education, AKEB marks the beginning of a transformative process to foster holistic and inclusive education.
