To mark the completion of 75 years of Pakistan, the Ministry of Planning Development and Special Initiatives bestowed Development Leadership Awards upon 75 remarkable individuals and institutions, divided into three categories: High Achievers, Emerging Leaders and Institutions, at a ceremony. This initiative aimed to commend those who have contributed significantly to the progress of Pakistan, inspiring others to follow and continue the journey towards a brighter future.

Amongst the esteemed recipients of these awards, the Aga Khan Foundation stood tall, embodying the spirit of transformative development. AKF’s commitment to fostering positive change in Pakistan is a testament to its dedication in enhancing the lives of citizens nationwide. The Aga Khan Foundation has played an integral role in shaping Pakistan’s growth trajectory by addressing critical issues such as education, healthcare and community development. Their recognition with the Development Leadership Award reminds them that collective efforts and partnerships can drive meaningful change.

Amongst the awardees is Dr. Zubaida Sirang, a recipient under the Emerging Leader category. Author of the best-selling book, ‘Optics Made Easy’, and Head of Ophthalmology Services at Aga Khan Health Service, Pakistan (AKHS,P), she has etched her name in the archives of Pakistan’s healthcare history.

With dedication and passion, Dr. Zubaida Sirang spearheaded the establishment of eye care services in the remote valleys of the Upper Chitral region. Residents of this valley have access to quality eye care facilities thanks to her unwavering commitment. Over the past year, thousands of surgeries have been performed, giving the gift of sight to those who previously could not afford treatment in larger cities. This compassionate approach to healthcare showcases the transformative power of accessible medical services, particularly in underserved areas.

One of the hallmarks of Dr. Zubaida’s work is her emphasis on reaching the remotest corners of the valleys. Her team conducts screening clinics in these areas, ensuring that even the most marginalized individuals receive the care they deserve. She is dismantling barriers that have previously hindered healthcare access for countless Pakistanis.

The Development Leadership Award bestowed upon Dr. Zubaida Sirang is a recognition of her achievements and a call to action for others to follow in her footsteps. Her journey exemplifies the power of determination, education and the relentless pursuit of one’s goals. She serves as a role model, particularly for young women aspiring to break barriers and make their mark.

Dr. Zubaida Sirang stated, “I’m thankful to the Almighty for His constant blessings, to the Government of Pakistan and the Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives for the honour and recognition. Additionally, I am immensely grateful to my family, teachers, friends and well-wishers for their unwavering love, prayers and support throughout this journey. This achievement would not have been possible without my exceptional teams’ dedicated and collaborative efforts at the Aga Khan Health Service, Pakistan and the Aga Khan University.”

The awards underscore the importance of recognizing and celebrating those driving the nation’s socioeconomic development and positive change. The Aga Khan Foundation’s relentless efforts and Dr. Zubaida Sirang’s inspiring journey stand as testaments to the potential of collective action and individual dedication.
