Lisbon, 7 September 2013 – Mawlana Hazar Imam is in Portugal for the 12th cycle of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, which was presented yesterday at Lisbon’s São Jorge Castle. As part of his visit Hazar Imam also held meetings with a number of senior Portuguese officials, and presided over the signing ceremony of a renewed Memorandum of Understanding between the Catholic University of Portugal and the Aga Khan University.

 
Accompanied by Prince Amyn, Mawlana Hazar Imam arrived in Portugal on 4 September. They were received by Pedro Mota Soares, Minister of Solidarity, Employment and Social Security, and Vazir Nazim Ahmad, AKDN Resident Representative for Portugal. President Aitmadi Amirali Bhanji of the Ismaili Council for Portugal welcomed them on behalf of the Jamat of Portugal.

The next day, together with His Eminence Manuel Clemente, the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon, Mawlana Hazar Imam presided over the signing ceremony of a renewed Memorandum of Understanding between the Catholic University of Portugal and the Aga Khan University at the Ismaili Centre, Lisbon. Afterwards, Hazar Imam hosted a lunch at the Centre for the distinguished guests.

In the evening, the Jerónimos Monastery was the site for a concert held on the eve of the Architecture presentation ceremony. Curated by the Aga Khan Music Initiative, it featured by Tânia Oleiro, a young-generation fado singer, who opened the concert, and was followed by a powerful performance from the Kronos Quartet.

Yesterday, the day of the Award Ceremony, His Excellency President Anibal Cavaco Silva of Portugal hosted a lunch in honour of Mawlana Hazar Imam at the Presidential Palace, before presenting the 2013 Aga Khan Awards for Architecture in the beautiful setting of Lisbon's São Jorge Castle.

Established by Mawlana Hazar Imam in 1977, the Aga Khan Award for Architecture seeks to identify and encourage building concepts that successfully address the needs and aspirations of communities in which Muslims have a significant presence. The Award recognises examples of architectural excellence in the fields of contemporary design, social housing, community improvement and development, historic preservation, reuse and area conservation, as well as landscape design and improvement of the environment.
