Starting in 1973, the Aga Khan Gold Cup has been a cornerstone in the annual golf tournament schedule. The event has been a testament to the Ismaili Council's commitment to promoting excellence in golf and providing a platform for golfers to showcase their skills.

During a visit to Dhaka in 1958, Mawlana Hazar Imam expressed his interest in starting a major international sports tournament in the region and provided the funding to the football authorities of then East Pakistan for the Aga Khan Gold Cup. It was the first international competition that involved club teams around Asia, from Iran to Indonesia, and till today is regarded as a predecessor of the Asian Football Confederation’s Champions League. The football tournament was held 15 times, and in 1973 the Aga Khan Gold Cup was repurposed to promote the sport of golf, and the rest is history. Over the past 49 cycles of the golf tournament, over 10,000 golfers have participated in the tournament,

The tournament was formally inaugurated by the Chief Guest Air Chief Marshal Shaikh Abdul Hannan, Chief of Air Staff, Bangladesh Air Force, on January 20 at the Kurmitola Golf Club.

A total of 393 players participated in the tournament, beating all past records. The tournament was conducted over two rounds, with a total of 158 golfers qualifying from the first round of play on Thursday and Friday to the second round held on Saturday. In the end, Major Golam Moudud won the Gold Cup in the Men’s category, with a score of 144 Net, and Mrs. Luna Sarker won the Gold Cup in the Ladies category with a score of 142 Net. Mr. Ikram Khan, a member of the Jamat from Pune, India, also received the Best Net award in the Senior category with score of 67 (Net 18 holes).

The Prize Distribution Ceremony and Dinner was held on the evening of January 21, 2023, at the Banquet Hall of the Kurmitola Golf Club. The event showcased the Ismaili community’s initiative to plant trees as part of the Global Ismaili CIVIC program, followed by a creative performance by the students of the Aga Khan Academy Dhaka on our responsibility to protect the environment. During a speech given by Air Chief Marshal Shaikh Abdul Hannan, he expressed his gratitude to the Ismaili Council for their contribution to social welfare through the Ismaili CIVIC initiatives and at the same time for patronizing sports like Golf in Bangladesh.
