The importance of mental health is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO), which defines it as "not simply the absence of disease or illness", but as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being". Therefore, as the understanding of the deep relationship between mental, physical and social health grows, it becomes evident that mental health is indispensable for the general well-being of seniors and the community.
From this new conception a new hope arises. It is an implicit challenge to a change in attitude.
How to promote mental health?
There are several ways to promote mental health: investing in the acquisition of knowledge on mental health, because it is essential for seniors to understand and recognize the symptoms of their illness early; to fight situations of stress and intense anxiety; to learn how to use mental and physical relaxation techniques. Above all, the senior must have the capacity to adapt to new circumstances of life, especially in the current pandemic context. Even with all restrictions on social contact, it is important to interact with others through phone calls or online applications.
It is also important to find tan inner balance, in order to answer the following questions: Who am I? Who do I want to be? What is the way forward? Fight for what makes us happy. Sharing affections and believing that we are capable of overcoming adversity. Just don't give up! Even when problems come knocking on your door, do not cross your arms, ask for help and believe that you will be able to overcome.
