The paradigm of active aging, proposed by the World Health Organization, has enabled the following reflection: if we are going to live longer, we are going to invest throughout life to minimize the negative impacts of greater longevity. Therefore, Elderly Care invited experts on the subject to talk to the seniors.

Portuguese

Elderly Care invited the retired Professor of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra and President of the Scientific Council and of the Centre Delegation of the Portuguese Foundation of Cardiology, Polybio Serra e Silva, as well Dr. Sandra Barradas, to the My Golden Events activity that took place on July 16th.

Healthy aging implies promoting health throughout the life cycle. The adoption of healthy lifestyles, through a balanced diet and regular physical exercise is an essential condition to delay functional impairment.

Several studies have demonstrated the benefits of regular physical exercise at a physiological, functional, social level and in promoting a better quality of life for seniors.

Aging is one of the risk factors for atherosclerosis (formation of fatty plaques in the arteries, which hinder the passage of blood).

We highlight some aspects related to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, mentioned by the professor:

  1. Practice regular and physical activity, appropriate to age and health status.
  2. Pay attention to food, avoiding excessive consumption of salt, fats and sugar, increasing the intake of fruits and vegetables.
  3. Try to reduce excess weight.
  4. Reduce or cease smoking habits.
  5. Control blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol levels.
