8 May 2009 - A historic international agreement was signed between the Portuguese Republic and the Ismaili Imamat on matters relating to religion, cooperation, culture and education. The agreement was signed by Foreign Minister Luis Amado and Mawlana Hazar Imam at the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During his one-day visit to Lisbon, Mawlana Hazar Imam held meetings with the Foreign Minister, as well as the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon, His Eminence D José Policarpo, the leader of the Democratic and Social Center – People's Party, Paulo Portas, and High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations and former Portuguese President, Jorge Sampaio.

The Portuguese Republic and the Ismaili Imamat share principles and values that honour the ethical meaning of human life, the pluralism of societies and the respect for the dignity of human beings, without any distinction of gender, race, creed, political persuasion or any other discriminating factor.

In the evening Mawlana Hazar Imam was invested as a Foreign Member, Class of Humanities of the Academia das Ciências de Lisboa (Sciences Academy of Lisbon). The Academy was established in 1779 as an institution dedicated to the advancement of science and learning.
