In an historic joint ceremony in Vancouver, the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Simon Fraser University (SFU) each conferred Mawlana Hazar Imam with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in recognition of his lifelong service to humanity.

On 19 October, Mawlana Hazar Imam was conferred with honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University at a joint ceremony, the first of its kind.

Mawlana Hazar Imam arrived in Vancouver today, accompanied by Prince Aly Muhammad, for the final leg of his visit to Canada. President of the Ismaili Council for British Columbia Samir Manji and Zulie Sachedina, Chair, International Conciliation and Arbitration Board (ICAB) greeted Hazar Imam and Prince Aly upon their arrival.

Mawlana Hazar Imam looks on as University of Calgary President Dr Elizabeth Cannon reads aloud the citation accompanying the honorary Doctor of Laws degree conferred upon him in a special ceremony at the University’s Rozsa Centre. The citation highlighted Hazar Imam’s outstanding contributions to humanity and expressed admiration for his ability to bring together faith and action.

The Aga Khan Garden, Alberta, was inaugurated on Tuesday 16 October 2018 in the presence of Mawlana Hazar Imam. The Garden joins a network of parks and gardens that have been established around the world through the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC).

On 2 October, the Aga Khan Palace in Pune was lit up in all its glory, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth. Shining like a beacon above Pune’s Nagar Road, the brightly lit Palace represents a fitting metaphor for Gandhi’s role as a guiding light in India’s campaign for independence.
