The dictum of the seventies was ‘Its a man’s world and a woman has no place in it.’ This was the underlying workplace statement the world over. Let’s look at this statement in the perspective of the historical, social, political and cultural environment of the people at that time.

Women have been working from time immemorial and the acceptance in society was not an issue. These were women in the lower class and middle class that needed the income. Professionalisation in women was rising concept in the western world and women entering the work force on par with men a new experience. Universities that were male dominated now started accepting more and more female students and the competition in the job market intensified.

The United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day in 1975 and in 1976 it announced the launch of the United Nations Decade for Women Program and 1977 it proclaimed March 8 as the UN Day for women’s rights and world peace. This also marked the birth of Feminism in the western world. Women were now getting more and more of their due recognition but the struggle still continues to date.

This era marked the entry of women into what were erstwhile coined as men’s jobs. The armed forces, aviation, engineering, medicine, construction, transportation, utilities, top management were all and still today to an extent are male dominated.

Women had to be twice as smart and efficient to get the same profile as her counterpart. Change always has a price to pay and our women of the seventies, eighties and nineties paid the price for us today to be able to command top jobs with greater ease than in the past.

On International Women’s day we take this opportunity to salute all women for the wonderful role they play in life-be it a mother, a daughter, a sister, a wife or a professionally employed individual or a leader of a business.

Woman you are strong, talented, creative, smart, humane, disciplined and learned. Your contribution has an important part of play in the functioning of the world. Above all we love you because you are YOU!

Cheers to all the women in the world wherever they may be.

Happy International Women’s Day
