A Makerspace is a collaborative work space inside a school or other facility to encourage students to design, experiment, build, and invent; as they engage in science, engineering, art, and other creative projects. Two students from Stanford University were selected to implement the Makerspace initiative at the Aga Khan Lycée in Khorog, Tajikistan.
Mawlana Hazar Imam attended the Geneva Conference on Afghanistan on 28 November 2018. The conference aimed to bring the international community together to show solidarity with the Afghan people and government in their efforts for peace and prosperity.
The Ismaili Centre London hosted a reception and launch event last month for the newly released book Understanding Sharia: Islamic Law in a Globalised World published by I.B. Tauris in association with The Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS). The book encourages new thinking about the history of sharia and its role in the world today.
The Aga Khan Foundation, the Institute of Ismaili Studies, and the Aga Khan University welcomed supporters to the Aga Khan Centre in September 2018, where senior leaders shared the progress of the institutions, and the positive impact they have made on the lives of individuals and communities around the world.
On 23 October, Prince Amyn was presented with the 2018 Hadrian Award by World Monuments Fund (WMF) Chair Lorna B. Goodman, who paid tribute to his “generous, thoughtful, responsible, and engaged” contribution to WMF. In his acceptance remarks, Prince Amyn emphasised the importance of monuments, and ensuring that they are self-sustaining and accepted by local communities.
Full video: Lt Governor of Alberta Lois Mitchell, Premier Rachel Notley and Mawlana Hazar Imam inaugurated the new Aga Khan Garden, Alberta, the northern-most Islamic garden in the world, and the first garden of its kind in western Canada.
On 19 October, Mawlana Hazar Imam was conferred with honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University at a joint ceremony, the first of its kind.
