In Islam, dates of many festivities are determined by the Muslim lunar calendar. The beginning of each month is set on the day the new moon appears. In the Pir Sadardin tradition, the Chandraat majlis was established in Bombay, India, over a century ago by Imam Sultan Mahomed Shah (peace be upon him). The aim of the Chandraat majlis is to seek spiritual strength together through special prayers of supplication. When the Chandraat falls on a Friday, that day is called Shukarvari Beej; on this occasion, the members of the Jamat from the Pir Sadardin tradition usually fast.
