Major Abdulla Jaffer Lakhpati was one of the founding members of the uniformed Ismaili Volunteers when it was established in 1919. A dedicated murid—and a talented artist and poet—he was an inspiring example of the committed service offered by volunteers to the Jamat, the Imamat, and to wider society in the 20th century.

The Aga Khan School’s science teachers provide students with the opportunity to broaden their horizons, and dive deep into the world of science and technology.

Dr Sadru Damji, a TKN volunteer based in Toronto, Canada, recently led an interactive and exciting online chemistry class in May 2021 for a group of grade 11 students at the Aga Khan School in Osh, Kyrgyzstan.

Many of us spend our weekends having much needed downtime, catching up with chores or spending time with family. How willing would you be to give that up? Yasmin Heath from Brighton Jamatkhana in the UK did just this when she served on a TKN assignment in Europe. For one weekend every month, for six months, Yasmin travelled to Germany to voluntarily help murids from Afghanistan learn English language skills.

In celebration of International Volunteer Day, The Ismaili is pleased to present We serve the Jamat, performed in Farsi by Najib Shirzad and volunteers from the Jamat in Afghanistan. The song depicts the humility and commitment of volunteers who ensure the wellbeing of the entire community, year after year.

Ismaili Volunteers in Portugal have been serving since the Jamat settled in the country in the 1970s.

The long-standing tradition of giving of one’s time and resources has been a significant aspect of the worldwide Jamat. On the occasion of International Volunteer Day, we explore the notion of voluntary service and the impact it has had in community building and enhancing quality of life.

Released to coincide with International Volunteer Day, We are IVC honours the Ismaili Volunteer Corps and others who continue a long-standing tradition by offering tireless and dedicated service to the Jamat and beyond.

Over the last two and a half years, a husband and wife team from Vancouver, Canada, have helped to establish the palliative programme at the Aga Khan University (AKU) Hospital in Karachi. Through onsite visits, numerous remote conferences, and ongoing correspondence with the local team, the couple were able to set up a sustainable, long-term programme, the first of its kind in Pakistan.

On the occasion of World Volunteer Day, 5 December 2019, The Ismaili is pleased to release the official song and music video to celebrate the centenary of the Ismaili Volunteer Corps (IVC), featuring participation from 41 countries across the world.

Faruq Vishram is an electrical engineer with a vision to light up lives by helping to develop renewable energy projects in Afghanistan and Northern Pakistan. He undertook a TKN assignment beginning in March 2015 to support a project funded by Global Affairs Canada to introduce solar energy to the newly inaugurated Bamyan Provincial Hospital in Afghanistan.
