Karen Armstrong delivers the Global Centre for Pluralism’s 2018 Annual Pluralism Lecture.

Karen Armstrong delivered the Global Centre for Pluralism’s 2018 Annual Pluralism Lecture at the Aga Khan Centre on 4 October, in the presence of Mawlana Hazar Imam, Princess Zahra, former Governor General of Canada Adrienne Clarkson, and Secretary General of the Global Centre for Pluralism John McNee.

Mawlana Hazar Imam, at the invitation of the President of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo, today joined world leaders at the funeral of former Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan. Mr Annan was laid to rest at a state funeral in Accra, Ghana earlier today. Hazar Imam was accompanied by Princess Zahra.

The Award, presented biennially, is designed to seek out those, “… who explore and investigate, and who then reflect on the difference that pluralistic commitments can make in specific contexts, at specific moments, in specific places,” Hazar Imam said. The Global Pluralism Award highlights what a commitment to pluralism can look like in practice.

Mawlana Hazar Imam is scheduled to arrive in Ottawa on 14 November to preside over the inaugural Global Pluralism Awards ceremony, being held Wednesday.

Ottawa, 16 May 2017 — Mawlana Hazar Imam and His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada officially opened the new international headquarters of the Global Centre for Pluralism today.

Ottawa, 15 May 2017 — Mawlana Hazar Imam arrived in Ottawa this afternoon, accompanied by Princess Zahra and Prince Aly Muhammad. Tomorrow Hazar Imam will be joined by His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada for the official opening of the international headquarters of the Global Centre for Pluralism.

The large contemporary photographs that greet visitors at the entrance to Syria: A Living History, contrast sharply with the devastation wreaked by the country’s six-year civil war. Toronto, 20 May 2016 — At a special ceremony held this evening, the Pontifical Institute for Mediaeval Studies awarded Mawlana Hazar Imam an honorary degree for his service to humanity. The Chancellor of the Institute, His Eminence Thomas Cardinal Collins, the Archbishop of Toronto conferred the degree at St Basil’s Collegiate Church.

A flagship event of the Global Centre for Pluralism, this year’s talk gave a riveting recount of how South Africa’s constitution was created.
