A series of exciting initiatives unfolded across Lisbon this week to coincide with World Youth Day (WYD), a global gathering for young Catholics to connect and engage in spiritual growth. In the spirit of pluralism and unity, the Ismaili community stepped forward to open its doors and join in the celebration of faith.
In the early 10th century, a group of Berbers from Algeria braved the desert heat and set out on a pilgrimage to Mecca. There, they met an Ismaili dai and were so impressed by his knowlege and erudition, that they invited him back to North Africa with them to set up the conditions for an Ismaili state. This state was named after Hazrat Bibi Fatima, beloved daughter of Prophet Muhammad and his wife Khadija (peace be upon them and their progeny). As Dr Shainool Jiwa explains in the latest episode of Muslim Footprints, this is the start of a remarkable story.
Global Encounters was created by Mawlana Hazar Imam during the Diamond Jubilee in 2017, bringing together flagship international programmes under one Institution, with the aim of uniting the Jamat through transformative experiences that enhance and promote all Ismailis' shared identity, global presence, individual talent and spirit, uplifting the communities in which we live.

Muharram is a month of remembrance in the Islamic calendar, observed every year as a time to honour and respect the life and deeds of Hazrat Imam Husayn (peace be upon him).
