The celebrations of 50 years of the Ismaili community’s significant presence in Canada continued today in the city of Edmonton, with a luncheon at Government House attended by Princess Zahra and Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Salma Lakhani, followed by the formal opening of the Diwan Pavilion at the Aga Khan Garden.

The short documentary “Islamic Gardens: Catalysts for Change” covers the vast network of parks and gardens around the world developed by the Ismaili Imamat, under the leadership of Mawlana Hazar Imam.

Water, an important element of traditional garden design in Islamic landscapes, is highlighted in 12 water features and fountains throughout the Aga Khan Garden in Edmonton.

The Aga Khan Garden, Alberta, was inaugurated on Tuesday 16 October 2018 in the presence of Mawlana Hazar Imam. The Garden joins a network of parks and gardens that have been established around the world through the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC).

Mawlana Hazar Imam will visit Canada in October 2018 at the invitation of leading civil society institutions. During this time, Hazar Imam will attend a special ceremony for the inauguration of the Aga Khan Garden, Alberta, to be presided over by the Honourable Rachel Notley, Premier of Alberta. He will also be awarded honorary degrees by three Canadian Universities for his achievements, and contributions to humanity.
