As a stay-at-home mom, Sakina was constantly changing her schedule as her kids were moving through their different stages of infant and toddler life. What started as a simple experiment to fill time in her day, in between activities and during her kids’ naps, became a full-fledged pursuit of creativity for Sakina, a painter and photographer from Kuwait. Sakina had been interested in art and poetry since childhood but wasn’t until much later that she decided to further explore her artistic talents.
“My inspirations are not confined to any specific subject per se. Anything and everything compels and brings out the artist in me,” explains Sakina.
Sakina’s subject matter tends to lean towards the more esoteric and abstract but still connects deeply to the tangible and natural world. “My art reflects the society and environment that we live in, which makes it an ideal medium to promote ideas like peace, harmony, community and connection,” says Sakina.
“I paint when I feel the urge; I feel the energy building up in my solar plexus and I am moved to paint my feelings or imagination on canvas. If my art appeals to viewers and they appreciate it, that’s a plus,” notes Sakina.
Sakina hopes that more artists will eventually be able to create work that is free from compulsion or pressure from external forces and she believes Jubilee Arts provides a much- needed platform for Ismaili artists to share, learn and grow, while also building on Mawlana Hazar Imam’s aspiration that arts from multiple traditions be cultivated and developed across the global Jamat.
“We are all one family, and what’s better than knowing, acknowledging and encouraging the artists amongst us? Jubilee Arts is a great opportunity for our Jamat to recognise artists amongst our global community.” concludes Sakina.
Jubilee Arts and the International Arts Festival provide an opportunity for artists, both budding and professional, to showcase their unique gifts . We encourage any and all artists within the
Jamat to participate in this Diamond Jubilee international programme. Follow the Jubilee Arts journey on the.ismaili/jubilee-arts.
