“WHEREAS, on Thanksgiving Day we are reminded of our responsibility to make sure that all Virginia families and individuals have adequate, healthy food and proper healthcare.” From Thanksgiving Day 2017 Proclamation, by Terence R. McAuliffe, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia
As Ismaili Muslims, we have much to be thankful for, including the support of our Imam, friends, family, and community, in times of need. The Ismaili ethic of compassion and sharing reminds us that we have an obligation to share our many opportunities and blessings with those who are less fortunate.
In this spirit, this Thanksgiving, Richmond I-CERV volunteers took part in the Thanksgiving Community Feast at the Greater Richmond Convention Center, where they greeted guests, served food, and distributed supplies to those in need. The annual event, hosted by The Giving Heart, brings together members of the community, volunteers and state leadership to sit down together for a Thanksgiving meal so that they can get to know one another. Community members in need also received winter clothing, books, and hygiene supplies.
Youth and adult volunteers from the Richmond Jamat served as Youth Ambassadors at the Feast, alongside the Governor of Virginia, Terry McAuliffe, Board Members of The Giving Heart, and staff from the Richmond Police Department. Together, the volunteers created a Gratitude Tree encouraging participants to write what they were thankful for. I-CERV volunteers distributed Gratitude Stones to policemen and other volunteers, appreciating their year-round commitment to safeguarding the community. Over 800 community volunteers took part in the 12th annual Feast that served 2,500 residents of Virginia, the largest Thanksgiving event in the city.
Governor McAuliffe issued a Proclamation reminding Virginians about the need to help others on Thanksgiving Day. I-CERV members were honored to be part of the Thanksgiving Community Feast where they could serve as proud Ismailis and Virginians.
