Once a boy asked his teacher, “How great is God?” Looking out the window, the teacher saw a plane and asked the student: “How big is that plane?” The student said, “It’s so small, you can hardly see it.” The teacher took the students to an airport and when they arrived near a plane asked: “And now, how big is this plane?” The student replied, “Oh teacher, this one is huge!” The teacher then said: “here is the answer to your question, the closer you are to God, the greater God will be in your life!”

This is a beautiful example, which helps us to reflect about the importance of religious education in our lives. It is through the teaching of religious education that children realize that faith is a strong inspirational source to live meaningful lives; so that they feel happy, confident, valued, and motivated to give the best of themselves in whatever they do. At Dar-at-Ta’lim, religious education is offered to children and youth of the Jamat, between the ages of 4 to 17 years old.

The Ta’lim Primary and Secondary curriculum introduces Islam from the perspectives of history, beliefs, practices, ethics, cultures and civilizations, through inquiry-based, experience-based and interactive-based approaches. While learning about their faith our children are also developing attitudes and learning skills that will help them throughout their lives. As Mawlana Hazar Imam said in a speech on 14th August 2007: “The way in which children are educated in their earliest years is a key which can unlock the doors of opportunity for the rest of their lives”.

Family is the single most important influence which helps children to acquire the basic principles of faith and moral values. Parents play a leading role in the religious education and formation of their children – in developing their understanding of faith as an integral part of life.

We encourage parents to engage their children in the Dar-at-Ta’lim classes provided by the Ismaili Tariqah and Religious Education Board. In our context, religious education of the younger members of the Jamat is a community endeavour and our dedicated volunteer teachers look forward to welcome and engage all children in their classes, on a weekly basis.

Therefore, on behalf of ITREB, we humbly request all parents to kindly motivate your children to attend Dar-at-Ta’lim classes regularly. Please contact regularly ITREB or the Secretariat for further queries.
