"I want to go shopping without help."
"I would like to speak to my child's school teacher."
"What does this sign say?"
"If I spoke portuguese, the job interview would have gone a different way."
These are some of the thoughts of someone who would like to speak portuguese. Moving to a new country is an enormous challenge: we don't know the people, the streets are new, the culture is different. And there is no culture without language, the two are intrinsically linked. To dominate the language is half way to learning the culture.
Learning a new language may seem so difficult... we know. What if we do it together? Connected!
Project Connect in Portuguese aims to bring Jamati members, speakers of other languages, closer to the portuguese language and culture, creating oportunities for them to learn and practice the portuguese language, as well as enjoy the culture. With this project, the National Council aims to increase the proficiency of portuguese language and sense of belonging in the Jamat and in the larger community.
Portuguese conversation classes will be held at the Ismaili Centre, starting on March.
