Outside Lisbon, people also celebrate and, perhaps, with even more animation and celebration!
In Bragança, the Caretos lead the procession and bring colour, joy, and a lot of rhythm to the streets. The Caretos, with their colourful costumes, masks, and rattles, take to the streets one sole aim: to scare single girls and dance to traditional music. The typical costumes for this celebration are made by artisans, with the aim of hiding the identity of those who give life to the Caretos.
The highlight of this celebration is the "Queima do Diabo", which is usually attended by thousands of people. In addition to keeping alive the tradition that constitutes the identity of a people, this initiative brings different cultures and generations together. Find out more here.
In Famalicão, the people all go out into the streets, properly masked, and celebrate in a very natural and genuine way! Full of joy and creativity, it's the place to celebrate whether you're in Porto or the surrounding area.
The Peniche Carnival - one of the most important carnivals in the centre of the country - begins on Friday 17th of February with the Corso do Carnaval Escolar.
But it is on Domingo Gordo that Peniche receives the first big Carnival parade, starting from Campo da República, next to the Fortress of Peniche, repeating the event on the 3rd Carnival fair.
And in Loulé, the oldest Corso in the country is back - on the 19th, 20th and 21st of February 2023 - to take the revelry to Avenida José da Costa Mealha. The joint candidacy of the municipalities of Loulé, Silves and Albufeira to the UNESCO World Geopark – Algarvensis, still as an aspirant, serves as inspiration for this year's parade.
