What led you to participate as a volunteer in the tour guides team in the Diamond Jubilee Celebration?

I wanted to volunteer in an impactful way, while learning more about the significance of our historic architecture. Being part of the tour guides team was a perfect way to do that, while meeting many interesting people from all around the world.

How was the experience of joining the Lisbon guides, and give tours in the Ismaili Centre, Lisbon, during the Diamond Jubilee Celebration?

The Lisbon guides team were so welcoming - they helped train and support us, as well as share their knowledge with us that we could use to enhance the visitor experience.

They also offered valuable insights and information to improve our understanding of the Lisbon Ismaili Centre.

Working alongside the Lisbon guides during such a significant celebration for all of us created a sense of camaraderie and belonging. They also created a really friendly atmosphere and made us feel like a big family. There are guides I met for the first time that I can keep in touch with to this day!

What aspect of the Ismaili Center, Lisbon impresses you the most?

The gardens were beautiful -  the variety of flowers and plants contribute to the Centre's aesthetic appeal and add to the overall beauty of the location.

What was the most memorable moment as a tour guide?

During the peak hours, we had a large line of visitors from outside the Centre. The energy and excitement in the air were palpable as people eagerly awaited their turn to visit the Centre. It was a busy and challenging time for the guides, but it was also incredibly rewarding. Working together as a team, we had to make a few changes at short notice to accommodate the influx of visitors - while it was hectic, it was also a special memory I'll always remember!

How has, working as a guide, impacted your personal life?

Working as a guide has had a profound impact on my personal life. It has allowed me to develop a profound understanding of our rich culture and history. Through my role, I have gained valuable knowledge about the architectural significance of our community spaces and how they have been meticulously designed to cater to the needs of our community.

Moreover, being a guide has given me the opportunity to form lifelong friendships. Even years after the Diamond Jubilee, I have remained connected with fellow guides whom I consider as close friends. We have met up on numerous occasions, reminiscing about our shared experiences and continuing to foster the bond we developed during our time as guides. The connections I have made through this role have enriched my personal life in immeasurable ways and have become an enduring source of joy and support.

What message would you leave for future guides?

Embrace the opportunity to learn about our rich history and significance of the Ismaili Centre.

Always wear a big smile and approach the role with enthusiasm and a positive attitude - your guided tour will leave a lasting impression on visitors and help them understand the Centre's significance.
