ShakeOut is a global initiative, held annually, that promotes the practice of a simulation exercise to prepare people to better protect themselves during an earthquake to prevent damage and injuries.

In addition, ShakeOut encourages the individual, community, schools and organisations to review and update emergency plans and kits and ensure that spaces are safer.

The best way to be protected during an earthquake is to: DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON.

  1. DROP – Drop to your knees by supporting yourself on your hands and knees;
  2. COVER - Protect your head and neck with your arms or by getting under a table;
  3. HOLD ON - Hold on to your cover until the shaking stops.

If you are:

  • Driving: stop on the side of the road, away from hazards (poles, trees). Stay inside the vehicle so you are protected.
  • Inside a building: stay away from windows. Drop, Cover and Hold On to protect yourself. Do not use lifts. Stay inside the building until the shaking stops and you are sure that it is safe to get out.
  • In a lift: Drop, Cover and Hold On. When the shaking stops try to get out at the nearest floor if you can do so safely.
  • In bed: hold on and stay there. Protect your head with your pillow.
  • In the theatre/cinema: stay in your seat. Protect your head and neck with your arms.
  • In a wheelchair: block the wheels. Bend forward and protect your head and the back of your head with your arms.
  • By the sea: Drop, Cover and Hold On so that you are protected. When the shaking stops, move to higher ground.
  • Outdoors: move away from buildings, trees and electricity poles. Drop, Cover and brace yourself to keep protected.

After the earthquake count up to 60 to ensure objects are stable and carefully move out of your cover. Stay calm and move cautiously, check for unstable objects or other hazards around you, and follow your evacuation plan.
