The Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS) is delighted to invite members of the global Ismaili community to experience the history and lives of the people of Cairo in our third offering of the IIS short course: Understanding Culture. The course will be taking place in Cairo, Egypt from 9th -14th November 2024. Join us!

This course is in collaboration with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, which has done significant work in the development of the Al-Azhar Park and various restoration projects of key sites in the city of Cairo and beyond. The key highlights of the course are:

1. Course sessions and interactive learning activities in the Al-Azhar Park with expert faculty from the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) and the Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS).

2. Field trips to key historical sites of Fatimid Cairo and AKTC restoration projects (e.g., Darb al-Ahmar).

3.A musical performance by student artists supported by the Aga Khan Music Programme; and,

4. Meeting and building connections with Ismailis from across the world.

If selected, you will receive a confirmation for participation email from the IIS Short Courses team, where you will have two weeks to confirm your acceptance for the course and pay your course contribution. Selection is on a first- come-first-serve basis with those who have an undergraduate degree and a proficient level of English.

Course Contribution: Each participant is required to contribute £1300 (GBP), covering the following expenses: Hotel accommodation (Shared: check-in on 8th November and check-out on 15th November 2024). Single occupancy is available at an additional cost. Breakfast, lunch, and transportation during the course, including travel from the hotel to excursion sites.

Participants are responsible for the following expenses:

  • Flights
  • Visas
  • COVID testing
  • Local transportation (including airport transfers and travel after hours)
  • Evening meals
  • Travel insurance.

This contribution is non-refundable and must be paid within two weeks of receiving the course acceptance email from the IIS.

Limited financial assistance is available for participants’ contributions to the IIS Short Course and will be determined on a case-by-case basis (new applicants: please select the appropriate option on the application form).

Visas: Where required, participants are responsible for applying for visas well in advance, based on official government guidance for travelling to Egypt from country/nationality. The IIS will provide the necessary information and guidance for applications but cannot assure the issuance of necessary visas.
