The new moon of Chandraat symbolises new beginnings. It is an opportunity for restartings, of some kind - conceiving new intentions while renewing our commitments to ourselves, our Jamat and our beloved Hazar Imam.

When Chandraat falls on a Friday, we refer to it as Shukravari Beej. The tradition of Shukravari Beej began in India and is observed predominantly, though not exclusively, by the Ismailis settled in South Asia. One of the practices that Ismailis observe on this day is fasting.

Fasting in Shukravari Beej is an act of faith that inspires reflection on our physical, moral, and spiritual needs. Fasting can take many forms and is not just limited to abstaining from food and drink. It is a time to curb negative thoughts and pay more attention to our actions.

The resulting increased awareness helps us to become more aware of Allah. We may also become more sensitive to the plight of those without adequate food, water, or shelter.

In our tradition we focus on the intention of the fast. We believe that when we fast with pure and true intentions, Allah will surely bless us with His compassion and grace.

As we inaugurate a new lunar cycle and a new month of the Islamic calendar tomorrow, what new intentions will we formulate for the coming days and weeks?
