The Aga Khan Social Welfare Board (AKSWB) is a recently established institution by Mawlana Hazar Imam, reporting to the National Council, and it replaces the former portfolio with the same name. Its objective is to enhance the quality of life and well-being of vulnerable families and all members of the Ismaili Community residing in the Portuguese jurisdiction (Portugal and Spain).

Its primary mission is to implement actions that provide socio-economic support and guidance to help the Jamat better manage their daily lives, ensuring their basic needs are met and that they live with dignity and within the quality-of-life standards accepted by the Imam.

The main areas of focus for AKSWB include:

  • Access to Social and Survival Benefits: Assisting people in accessing social benefits and resources necessary for their survival, such as financial assistance, food, and decent housing.
  • Management of Family Budgets: AKSWB provides guidance on how to effectively manage the family budget, ensuring that available resources are used appropriately.
  • Social Advocacy: Acting as an advocate for the rights of vulnerable families, working to ensure they have access to services and benefits they are entitled to.
  • Life Path Planning: Assisting the Jamat members in planning their life paths, setting goals and strategies to achieve them. Ensuring financial sustainability throughout life by adopting responsible financial practices that secure not only one's present and future but also protect the financial well-being of future generations.
  • Smart Store: AKSWB operates a store called Smart Store in Seixal, where community members can access free items such as clothing, footwear, kitchen utensils, and other essential items. The store is open every Thursday from 3pm to 5pm and on Saturdays by appointment (Helena Danji: 936 434 087).

To better meet the needs of the Jamat, AKSWB invests in training activities for its members, with the first of these actions taking place on September 23 with the theme "Changing Lives."
