“If a door hasn’t opened, you haven’t kicked it hard enough”, said Obaid-Chinoy as she talked about her career as a documentary filmmaker and journalist.  During a moderated conversation with Ahad Lakhani, Obaid-Chinoy shared her passion for human rights, women’s issues, the disenfranchised and marginalized.

Telling stories since the age of 14, Obaid-Chinoy has been bringing unheard voices to the forefront, often helping to bring about critical change to communities around the world.

Obaid-Chinoy is the first Pakistani to win an Academy Award.  In 2012, she won an Academy award and Emmy award (best documentary) for Saving Face and in 2016, she won an Academy award and Emmy award (best documentary) for A Girl in the River:  The Price of Forgiveness. This is in addition to a number of other international awards. 

Prior to speaking at the Ismaili Centre, Toronto, Obaid-Chinoy’s film, Song of Lahore (2015), a documentary which follows a group of musicians as they travel from their home in Pakistan to New York City to perform at the Lincoln Center in New York City, was screened at the Aga Khan Museum.
