Prince Amyn Aga Khan in his official opening address at the Ethics in Action exhibition in Portugal in November 2017 remarked that the Ismaili community was fully integrated into the life of Portugal. He noted that the activities of the Ismaili Imamat are based on shared values and that joint efforts are being made towards creating a more pluralistic outlook, saying that “At a time of conflict..., what we are doing shows we share a common culture and that we are all brethren, whether born here or elsewhere”. This work is undertaken through the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) a collection of institutions and programmes established by Mawlana Hazar Imam, working to improve the well-being of individuals and communities in some of the poorest regions of the world.
In particular, Ethics in Action focuses on eight ethical principles central to the work of AKDN and demonstrates how each of these guides development projects in fields as varied as healthcare and heritage preservation. The exhibition is accompanied by a smartphone application that allows visitors to explore projects further. Grounded in our traditions of service, care, and compassion, Ethics in Action expresses the ideals of AKDN protecting and sheltering those it serves, symbolised by the canopy under which a selection of artwork and handicrafts are displayed. Guests at the exhibition will learn about the intricate embroidery, glittering gemstones, and bright fabrics on display. There will be stories about the lives touched through various development projects.
