Southwest Youth Engaged in the Diamond Jubilee

More now than ever, Ismaili youth are challenged and questioned about their faith. The youth of the Jamat are an integral part of the development of our faith and ambassadorship of Islam, and experiences like the Diamond Jubilee are helping to define their relationship with the Imam and the community.

In particular, Areep Gowani said, “I have a deeper understanding of the Imam’s role and a greater sense of appreciation for his guidance. The experience of the Diamond Jubilee has made me feel closer to him.” He explained how the Imam always served as a role model for him, but he was not fully aware of the extent of Hazar Imam’s awards and service to humanity until he learned about them during the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. This new-found knowledge for Areep is a significant motivator to be a better representative of Islam, as well as a better student in school.

For Fizza Dhanani, her piety is quite different than that of her parents, but the experiences of the Diamond Jubilee has left her with more knowledge about her faith than before. She hopes that being more informed about her role in the community can develop her devotion over time. Fizza uses words like “exemplary” to describe what the Imam means to her. Fizza also mentioned that the youth programming like the Golden Voyage is encouraging her to volunteer her time to the Ismaili community.

The sheer energy that was encapsulated in the NRG arena, where Houston’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations were held, inspired Rayaan Vellani throughout the day. “The significance of the Diamond Jubilee really set in, when I realized that there are only four other Imams who have reached this point,” he said. “This is a major historic moment in our faith.”

From the start of the pre-celebrations in individual Jamatkhanas to the stage performances at NRG, the unity of our faith is evident throughout the festive year. Celebrating the different cultures, traditions, and dances of the global Ismaili community is a heartwarming experience that has affected many in the community, and especially the youth who will be leaders of tomorrow.
