Toronto, 8 June 2017 – The Canadian movie premiere of The Sultan and the Saint, a visionary film which speaks with urgency to our present, took place at the Aga Khan Museum before a sold-out audience. A second viewing took place at the Aga Khan Museum on 11 June 2017.
In 1219, during the decades long war between Christians and Muslims, Malik Al-Kamil, the Sultan of Egypt, welcomed two humble friars, men of a religious order pledged to poverty and nonviolence who had risked everything to cross battle lines. The lead friar, a man later known as St. Francis of Assisi, was seeking to bring an end to the fighting between these two faiths. Told with cinematic-style reenactments and interviews with renowned historians, religious thinkers, and other experts, the film centers on these two men of faith, who had an improbable meeting during a terrible period of religious conflict between their faiths, and discovered a way of finding peace between them. Prior to the screening, Mr. Alex Kronemer, the writer and director of the film, and co-founder and CEO of Unity Production Films (UPF) addressed the audience on the making of the film and its important message which is of great relevance today.
Mr. Kronemer has won numerous awards for his work in promoting peace and interfaith understanding. A graduate of Harvard Divinity School, he previously served in the US Department of State’s Bureau of Human Rights and was part of the team of peace activists who helped establish the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C. UPF films have been viewed by an estimated 150 million people and have won dozens of national and international awards. UPF have partnered with prominent Jewish, Muslim, Christian and interfaith groups to run dialogues nationwide in classrooms, community centers, government offices and religious congregations.
